NOLA’s First Bike Lane!
I have been stuck in my office and was not able to make it out for the ribbon cutting this morning, but I am thrilled to report the Crescent City’s first actual bike lane! It runs down both sides of St. Claude.
For text and pics go check out Prosthetically Hip!
I would sacrifice much to get one of these running from Carrollton to the Bywater….

Bike lane good! Ann Duplessis bad! Check out state SB672… she wants to give legislators a 400% pay raise! It’s already passed the Finance Committee and is on its way to the full house.

I thik there is a marked bike lane on Robert E Lee, part of the recent repaving, athough I don’t know if there was a ribbon cutting.

Ribbon Scmibbon…the ceremony served mostly to block traffic, and allow James Carter to be grumpy with siccors.
The bike lane, however, is a thrill & a joy. Just last Tuesday, a car with Mass. Plates tried to pass me in the neighborhood, leaving me no choice but to stop dead or get squished between his car and a parked one. To my shout of “look out!” the driver yelled, “get that bike off the road!” Yankee out-of-town bastard.
A bike lane means more than a designated riding strip. It’s recognition that bicycles are vehicles with rights and right of way. PLEASE, observe all traffic laws when using these lanes. It allows car drivers to anticipate your moves, and the more successful these new bike lanes are, the more likely we’ll get them throughout the city, eventually.
PS Play ‘Born To Be Wild’ in your head as you pedal down St. Claude. Just do it.

I am very excited about this bike lane and I hope more and more pop up around the city. Not that drivers really pay attention to bikers anyway.

Not to be a killjoy - I’m as happy as the next there is an official bike lane on St. Claude - but please, please, please be careful when crossing the side streets. Since we moved onto St. Claude 3+ years ago, we’ve seen 10-15 accidents (several fatal) caused by cars zipping out from the side streets across St. Claude without looking. I’m sure y’all are smart enough to already have this under consideration, but the mom hiding in me insists that I post this reminder anyway…
