Last night I met a couple from Illinois, who lost everything, their business, their home, their entire small town about two months ago. They were flooded out, for a long time, and didn't make it on the news.

They owned a bar, of which there were only two in the small town they were from. Now, they are the only bar, since the other didn't survive...

They had photos, and they were exhausted. They had finished gutting, and were on a mini vacation before going back to live in their bar, since their house was gone.

When I asked if Fema had stepped in to help, they said they had applied, but never heard back. When they did the follow up call, they were told they never applied, and then when they tried to re-apply, they were told they were trying to work the system, and so they had been bumped out of the system. No flood insurance, since they had never really flooded. Their pictures were heartbreaking. They looked like they were just really broken. I think of Iowa, and then I realize that it was much more than that.

Like here, so many things we will never really know.

Thanks for the information, and the effort. Turning one person's disaster experience in to another's helping hand is a beautiful spin on an otherwise crushing blow.

I encourage readers to repost this information, far & wide.
I have, and will. The ability of people to give of themselves in times such as these is amazing, as we've seen here, first hand.

Great work and thanks again.

Lakeview is still struggling with its own recovery, and yet Beacon of Hope, an organization created to help the local Katrina victims, and the Episcopal Diocese (St. Paul's Episcopal in Lakeview has done so much for the neighborhood post-K!) are managing to send people and other aid options to the flood victims in Iowa ...
That is absolutely beautiful, and it's, in my not-so-humble opinion, a shining example of how compassionate good people can be.
