Correction Re: Silence Is Violence

This email just in:

Hi–Will you please arrange a clarification on the Windy City blog that SilenceIsViolence is *not* planning a protest against Nagin on Friday? While some of us may well be out there in personal protest, we are not planning (nor have we indicated that we are planning) anything organized–I am getting tons of emails and phone calls requesting information that I don’t have.

Thanks for any help in clearing this up!

An event like this and you’re *not* planning a protest?

For whatever reason, Silence Is Violence has decided not to make this a formally sponsored event. I mistakenly suggested otherwise, and stand corrected, by my own word.

My thought about that is this: The actual issue being protested here is the assignment of an award to an individual many see as unfit fof office as well as unworthy of an award for performance.

Silence Is Violence was formed and exists to protest violence, and to encourage citizens to speak up about it.

Apparently the call has been made that the Mayor’s self indulgent Award Ceremony and the failure of his administration to address violent crime are somehow unrelated.

    Go figure.

If someone was organizing they would need to file permits, something that has become increasingly hard to do as the current Mayor’s term progresses.

It is amazing how like Bush he is in his approach to transparency. Proves nce more that party lines mean little, they all need supervision.

I’ll repost my response to Kevin Allman’s blog on BestOfNew Orleans:

I can’t help but think that there’s a line drawn here defining Oragnized Protest as one having an appointed leader and spokes person (spokes model?), city permits, an office and fax/printer. How very bureaucratic…

I’ve spoken to dozens of people who have chosen to go to this, and held discussions regarding time & place, carrying cell phones for contact, mode of transporation, etc. They certainly seemed very organized to me.

The idea that one would have to go to City Hall to get a permit to criticize City Hall is beyond absurd.

I might suggest here that there was no Organized Protest that King George could see in the American Colonies.
All the same, that one seems to have come off pretty well.

Perhaps the definition of reporter and blogger stand on different sides of a grey area. While there is no ‘Organization’ or ‘Defined Leader’ to report on, blogs report the movements of organized people that official news reporters ignore. I’ve personally sent several letters to the Time Picayune about this event, none of which were ever printed.

Perhaps official letterhead and a brief case would have gotten more attention.
