Sometimes it does Henry, sometimes it does. The thing to keep in mind here concerning Louis' comments is that due to the amount of media fostered misinformation the reaction that most New Orleanians receive is most often of a pejorative nature.

When my wife and I ran, we ran North. During Katrina we ran to NYC, during Gustav we ended up in Cinci, OH. Both times we ran across many good people. Both times we also repeatedly had to step away from ignorant attitudes such as people looking us square in the eye and saying "why should we care about that shit-hole full of fags and junkies?"

When you have just sent everything running from a storm, thrown out all the food in your fridge, and are on pins and needles about who is going to die this time it impacts your mood.

I thank whatever higher power might exist for the progressives across the nation, and I fear the influence of the new right.

The anonymous platform of the Internet is well known for allowing people the ability to say the most incredibly barbaric things, things they would often never have the balls to say face to face.

Thanks for reading, and please comment again f the urge strikes you.

"People in the nation to the north frequently whine and complain when we ask for help after hurricanes, or for the funding to build our levees and restore our wetlands. Louisiana is the new poster child for government dependence in their play book, the new Cadillac-driving welfare queen."
Alright... Obviously, you realize that there are pockets of environmentalists spread out all over the U.S. (North, South, East and West) and the world, who realize the urgent need for wetland conservation and the dire consequences of heedless drilling. There are pockets of critical thinkers and intelligent analysts everywhere. Perhaps you should reserve much of your animosity for the mainstream media, which tends to neglect these issues (for instance, I believe that Palin's stance on climate change is more backwards than even Bush's - if such a thing could be possible - but it is scarcely talked about!).
I and many others like me deeply admire the folks who have the wherewithal to fight police and government indifference and/or corruption in New Orleans and surrounding areas, and to continually push for wetland restoration and construction of adequate levees. I am certain that many "Northerners" feel this way. Maybe some of the more sophisticated thinkers, however, are just too busy to spend too much of their time mouthing off on blogs(?) I do sometimes wonder if blogging sometimes attracts small-minded hate-mongers seeking a soapbox from which to spew venom and/ or aggrandize their egos.
