where elephants go to die

September 7th, 2008 by PH Fred

they say that people and elephants know when the end is near… heck, my father use to look in the paper everyday to check the obituaries to see if he had died in his sleep… AND a week before he died, he canceled the paper and proceeded to clean the house and “visit his stuff” one last time. he didn’t need to wait to read it… he just knew.

i feel like i’m reaching the end game… not in a morbid way BUT rather in a way that i sense that i’m sick and i need to finish a few chores before i go… the KREWE DE CAMP benefit CD is turning out well… at last count, STEVE HUNTER, FERNANDO SAUNDERS, THE ROCHES, MICHELLE SHOCKED , DAVE ALVIN, ARLO GUTHRIE, MIKE WATT and possibly with fernando’s help even LOU REED all appear to be on board in some way, shape, and/ or form…. they join the new orleans gang of SUSAN COWSILL, CRANSTON CLEMENTS,  JIMMY MESSA, PAUL SANCHEZ,  JIM McCORMICK, ANDERS OSBORNE, JOHNNY J, etc. over 50 plus artists

but between the manic lack of sleep and the katrina flashbacks caused by the gusatv, ike, and their cousins in the carribean, i’m not sure how much more i can do,,, the lung problems which arose after katrina appear to be back… breathing, talking, singing are all labored. PLUS now the fatigue and the insomnia are a tug of war that is far from a healthy equilibrium.  the elphant walk seems inevitable…

i hope i’m just crying wolf… i hope the sky doesn’t fall…i hope i can see this project to its fruition just want to raise 30k-40k and keep the camp going for a few more years… if all goes well, i can set up a trust fund for the camp.. so it can go on for quite a while

peace, ph fred

Zachary Wright

Ten year old Zachary Wright, New Orleans born and raised, was diagnosed with Osteochondromatosis, a rare bone disease. He has courageously endured five successful operations to correct ongoing abnormal bone growth (Thank You, Shriners!!),and is currently gearing up for another round this summer and fall to get him out of his wheelchair, walking, biking and running again…

Meanwhile, there are important expenses not covered by insurance that his mother, Donna, would so appreciate your help meeting. For example: Zach’s writing hand is failing. He is a straight A student at the International School of Louisiana, and an Alpha Smart Keypad will really help him keep up with his class next year. Also, the back-log in settling disability cases is much greater in New Orleans since Katrina. The work missed by Zach’s mom while she cares for him is income lost.

Because getting Zachary well again should be their only concern, his friends are holding a fundraiser. We hope you can come enjoy yourselves and make this special event successful for this very special little boy!

Alan Czarzasty’s Benefit @ Ernie K-Doe’s Mother-in-Law Lounge

May 16th, 2008 by Loki

WHERE: Ernie K-Doe’s Mother-in-Law Lounge
1500 N. Claiborne Avenune
(504) 947-1078

Music by Margie Perez and Skin Verb. Celebrity auctioneer

As many of you know, Alan (pic attached) is a self-taught artist who specializes in making paintings, papier-mache masks and Mardi Gras costumes. He lived in the Bayou St. John neighborhood of New Orleans, and many of you have probably met him at Whole Foods, where he worked.

In 2004, Alan was diagnosed with Stage IV Melanoma. He was treated with an immunotherapy regimen, but by 2007 the cancer had spread. Alan had applied to but was rejected from several clinical trials due to a weak heart. He then decided to do what he does best — live life. He planned a road trip to the Northeast where his ultimate goal would be to attend Clown School in New York.

In August of 2007, while in Philadelphia, Alan suffered a massive stroke. He spent nearly seven weeks in a hospital and endured two life-saving brain surgeries. The melanoma had travelled to his brain, causing the stroke. He is now paralyzed on the left side of his body and is fighting the cancer at his parents home in Riverside, New Jersey.

The goal of this benefit is to provide some financial relief to Alan’s parents, Lucy and Walt, both of whom are living on a fixed income and who care for Alan around the clock.

Please join us on May 17, and please spread the word. To donate for the auction, please contact any of us (info below).

Help Suspect Device

November 15th, 2006 by Loki

In case you didn’t hear, our very own Suspect Device, Greg Peters, is about to undergo open heart surgery. He is one of our best and brightest, acidic and observant both on the net and in print. In order to continue to produce during his convalescence he is in rather urgent need of a new laptop. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is one of the local voices we cannot afford to lose. Please help lend a hand by making a small donation, if enough of us do then we can get him the tools he will need. From what I gather we are almost halfway there already, and that in less than a day!

Need proof of why this man needs a laptop? read this(pdf)
