Run For The Border

November 28th, 2006 by Loki

Well, by this time tomorrow evening we will be setting down in San Juan, our first trip out of the country together. The morning after its off to Dominica, a near complete opposite of New Orleans: ecologically pure, primarily organic, and not buried in neglected rubble. Dominica is home to Morne Trois Pitons National Park, UNESCO’s only designated World Heritage Site in this region of the Caribbean and is a prime eco-tourism destination. If you’ve seen Pirates of the Caribbean 2 you have seen the island.

We will be out of touch until the 7th when we return to the US, so you will have to hope PH Fred goes easy on you! Many thanks to my father in law, this trip is his wedding present to us!

In the meantime everybody keep a candle lit for that shining star of vitriolic insight and justified rage, Geg Peters of Suspect Device. Some of you may be unaware, but he is undergoing heart surgery up in Cleveland right now. The one thing about our trip that sucks is that we will probably note be able to get word if he makes it until after we return to the states. (Any NOLABloggers with my cell number who get word before 3pm Wed call and let me know, after that I have to turn it off and won’t have access again until I return)

Upon my return the usual yearly array of sick holiday humor and Crescent City Commentary for the middle segmet of that 4 month long holiday monster known as Thanksmasgras. Be ye warned……

Help Suspect Device

November 15th, 2006 by Loki

In case you didn’t hear, our very own Suspect Device, Greg Peters, is about to undergo open heart surgery. He is one of our best and brightest, acidic and observant both on the net and in print. In order to continue to produce during his convalescence he is in rather urgent need of a new laptop. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is one of the local voices we cannot afford to lose. Please help lend a hand by making a small donation, if enough of us do then we can get him the tools he will need. From what I gather we are almost halfway there already, and that in less than a day!

Need proof of why this man needs a laptop? read this(pdf)

Dear New Orleans

August 12th, 2006 by Loki

Greg Peters at Suspect Device pointed out this thread on the National Geographic site. It shows just what we are up against. Pages upon pages of vitriol and “logical,” arguments about why we should not rebuild.
It is VITAL that we make people understand what is really happening and why it is important to rebuild. It is not only important, but also our civic duty to get across to them how misplaced their faith in the Army Corps of Engineers is before it happens to them. It seems the admissions of culpability made by the Corps only got play in Louisiana and European media. No one else seems to have any idea.
Many of the comments on this thread express faith in the Corps and their ability. Terrifying. What is going to happen when we have a huge earthquake in CA, devastating tornado season in Tornado Alley, or some other massive disaster?

It is about survival, but it is also about preventing our countrymen from suffering the same way we have been. Many Americans may have a “fuck you New Orleans,” attitude, but we must persevere. If we cannot change that, well a phrase that has been going around a lot here is, “If at first you don’t secede, try try again!” After the way this has been handled we obviously are not considered part of the US anymore anyway….

Shut down the Port of New Orleans for one week. Trust me, they will get the picture.
