Moving to Portland! (Attn RSS Readers!)

August 19th, 2008 by Loki

Yes, thats right, HumidCity is moving to Portland, OR. Not only that but we leave this weekend, at least the ones and zeros do.

After two and a half years of hosting kindly donated by ThinkNOLA the HumidCity site will be relocated to servers owned by Green Tangerine Media, who are also being quite kind to us. ThinkNOLA is shutting its doors. The team writing are still in New Orleans, the attitude is still in New Orleans, but our servers will be outside the storm zone.

I am stressing this for a few reasons, first of which is the fact that we may end up with some dead time during the change. It can sometimes take a day or two for the address to map to the new server. In other words while I hope there won’t be any, the possibility of down time is one to be aware of. The move will be late at night on Friday so there will be no new blog posts from dinner time on.

In addition, those of you following on Feedburner or through Feedblitz will need to add us again after the move. The feedburner account is ThinkNOLA’s and we cannot take it with us.

I’m letting you all know about this in advance because the memory of our three days of downtime a few months back haunts me. It haunts me I tell you!

Look for some major improvements to the site in the near future!

Back Online!

May 22nd, 2008 by Loki

Hey out there in Internet Land ™, we are now back online! Sorry about the outage, I must take responsibility for a good bit of the problem. You see I did not have the DNS set properly when we moved to the new server, and once it did get set up we experienced a long drag while waiting for the new settings to propagate. In plain English, I was not too bright and then the Internet was slow.

Thanks to the hard work of Alan Gutierrez at ThinkNOLA, the long suffering man who has donated hosting and assistance to HumidCity since the first Jazz Fest after the Levee Failure, we are now back online and upgraded to the new version of WordPress. Alan, you rock!

To the HumidCity Team: If you experience any issue with/confusion over/bad jokes about the new back end interface let me know via email and I will happily assist.

Geek Dinner II: The Sequel

August 19th, 2006 by Loki

Saturday night is the Geek Dinner, the past two days have been spent cleaning out the site of my old apartment in Broadmoor and making ready for the arrival of the many geeks, technophiles, and web publishers who will be attending. Check out the details on the Geek Dinner page of the ThinkNOLA New Orleans Wiki.

Many thanks to my business partners Dudley and Chris as well as Esther N., and UptownGirl for helping out with the clean out/site prep! I raise my Gatorade in your honor! Additional thanks to Alan from ThinkNOLA for starting the Geek Dinners in the first place, one of the many efforts he has made to use technology for the good of New Orleans.

The Geek Dinner is sponsored by ThinkNOLA, 504Data.Com and Stormhoek Wine.

Drop in, speak up, geek out!

EDIT: *slaps forehead* Oh yeah, if you aren’t coming by check out the Antigravity Alternative Media Expo. If you do stop by and check out Oyster at the Rising Tide table, Jac at the Defend New Orleans table, and visit the DaFa Fungus table (I hear they’re packing DVDs of Zombie! vs. Mardi Gras).

A Boggle of Bloggers

July 15th, 2006 by Loki

Having just returned from a joyous day in a full body decon suit and face mask, sweltering in the heat and feeling like a character from the Andromeda Strain, I finally get to sit down and inflict my thought processes upon you all.

Yesterday, the day before my adventures with black mold, was Bastille Day. It was also the day of the ThinkNOLA Geek Dinner over at Casa Guttierez. Unexpected family issues had come up duiring the day, so I had not had time to cook yet. When I arrived it was toting a gumbo pot and jambalaya ingredients and looking harried. A quick survey of the building turned up a working stove a cocktail and we were off.

Boggle (bgl) n. - collective noun used to describe a group or gathering of bloggers. Usually accompanied by libation, conversation, and strange paranormal events.

As I cooked and had a few drinks the rogues gallery materialized. Shecky Darwin aka AdrastosDangerblond, Sophmom our NOLAblogger adoptee, Ashley, Maitri, Ray, Oyster, Editor B., Markus, Karen, Lisa, Schroeder, and Gentilly Girl (in whose honor this post shall be long), bombarded the place with personality and joie de vie.
It was most peculiar having people tell me they liked my stuff. Many are the times I feel I am simply ranting into vacuum. It was an interesting counterpoint to finally attaching faces, voices, and personalities with the words that regularly scroll across my computer screen.

Talking with Lisa was great, she and I have lot in common even if she is a Mac Elitist, I’m jealous she actually saw the Sex Pistols! . Likewise it was great to finally meet Oyster, who lives in my block and is the man whose post here on Humid City crystallised our decision to evacuate (When your own blog tells you to leave you LEAVE). Ray and Adrastos are also in the immediate neighborhood (insert Mr. Bingle Voice singing “It’s a Small World After All.”) Personally I am predicting sarcasm over drinks soon…

Anyway, Alan was a fantastic host and it was good to see him actually meeting these folks as well and filling them in on what we are trying to do with ThinkNOLA. Many hands make light work and hopefully some of the attendees will be interested in getting involved. It was far from sales pitch night though, it was a damn nice little shindig.

The icing on the cake was the arrival of Kalypso, the ten year old blogger who made this videoMichael Homan, a blogger himself and a really nice guy. I think he was a bit taken aback by the love the NOLAbloggers have for his daughter and her film. Its brilliant work, he should be very proud. which you must watch! Go. Do it. I’ll Wait………See? A journalistic prodigy, I cannot wait to see her tackle D.C. in fifteen years or so! Her father

I would love to say something about each of these digital maniacs but I am going on too long as it is. If you are reading this and have not already, I encourage you to visit all of the links in this post. You will find a wild and wooley variety that, taken as a gestalt, will provide you a window into the reasons We Are Not OK and what we are doing to change that. Visit them, leave a comment, stay informed.

We are the voices in the wilderness. We are the warriors of the wasteland. We have carpal tunnel syndrome. welcome to New Orleans, have a nice day!

What? Geek dinner, whats that? Could the New Orleans Wiki provide an answer? In detail? Why yes! Are you enough of a geek for this? Hmmmm….. You live in NOLA ten months Post-K and manage to get online? I do believe that qualifies.

The lovely Alexis and I will be attending along with our own array of freaks, misfits, and general ne’er do wells. Look for me, say “Hi!” Join us for some of the Stormhoek wine so kindly provided for the evening. This event is put together by ThinkNOLA, a group of up and coming silicon superheroes operating in the ruins of the Greatest American City!

Think

July 3rd, 2006 by Loki

I fired up the laptop to rant and rail about the things that are destroying my city. Before I could I got diverted by an email detailing a venomous online postfest on another blog I read. Reading through it was enough to force a resolve on my own part, to make this a positive post. With that in mind I am going to give a little detail on an organization I am working with here in the city called ThinkNOLA. I have been asked about them a few times lately and figured presenting the data here would enlighten a lot of people.

Capacity Building : We are trying to teach nonprofit organizations how to publish information so that people can find it, and how to use the Internet as office space.

Think New Orleans shows organizations how to share information with their constituents, we show how to lead discussions in public forums that attract participation, we show how to organize events with calendaring tools and authoring tools, how to create living documentsthrough collaborative authoring in a web accessible forum.

With the Internet Workshops, Think New Orleans creates a collaborative environment where nonprofit and neighborhood organizations can share knowledge, publish information, and develop skills and strategies to employ the Internet in the rebuilding or New Orleans.

Call For Help

June 1st, 2006 by Loki

I have been working a lot with a great new nonprofit (waiting on the 509A-educational nonprofit to go through) called ThinkNOLA. Last week we launched our first workshop, Web Publishing 101, aimed at bringing the tools of the internet to community and civic organizations here in the New Orleans area.

We are organizing local bloggers and other web based publishers and activists in order to create a positive force for improving our battered city. With this in mind we have formed a group of blogging “elves,” people who are actively assisting those new to the medium in getting their information out.

We are also launching a New Orleans Wiki, an interactive information base where people can go to find important community information and resources as well as being able to easily add their own. In the words of Alan Gutierrez, the man behind ThinkNOLA and the NOLA Wiki, “…nine months later, I see that there is still a online civic resource that is neighborhood focused, and in the hands of the citizens. Please help me build the Think New Orleans Wiki. A web site that any citizen or friend can edit.”
What we need now is help. People with time they are willing to contribute to help us as Elves, to help with the Wiki, to help us use this technology as a force with which to build community where we need it most. If you are willing to assist us please leave a note in the comments section here and we will contact you.

Thanks in avance to everyone willing to join us as we do our digital best to rebuild New Orleans. Get wired!

Web Publishing Workshop

May 25th, 2006 by Loki
Think New Orleans will be hosting a web publishing workshop this coming Thursday.
The Web Publishing Workshop will introduce community organizers to web publishing using WordPress, a software program that makes publishing a web site as simple as writing an email. Loki from Humid City, Editor B. from B.Rox and Alan Gutierrez of ThinkNOLA are the currently confirmed instructors as of May 23rd, 2006.
The Web Publishing Workshop will be held at 1832 Felicity St, New Orleans, LA which is between St Charles Ave and Oretha Castle Hailey. The workshop will be held at 6:00 pm on Thursday, May 25th, 2006.
I want to thank Paul Baricos from the New Orleans Housing Resource Center for providing us with the facilities to host the web publishing workshop.
