Hostilidays – A Long Distance Salvo

Dec 17, 2010 by Loki

It is that time of year again. The time when anomie gets the better of those of us who blog in and about NOLA. It’s been hard for me to write here, as you’ve probably noticed, I’ve just felt so removed since life forced a northwards move upon us. Not out of touch, but as though by not being in the middle of it anymore robs me of the right. Intellectually I know this to be untrue, but still…

Now you should live in fear. That time is over. Let this, my first salvo in the annual Hostilidays [The annual evil xmas video war] herald my return to regular posting. Many thanks to my number two, Liprap, and to Jack Ware for keeping the boat afloat while I’ve been off my game.

And now, for your grinchy pleasure I’d like to present Warner Herzog reading A Night Before Xmas. Deal with it.

NOTE: For those of you unfamiliar with our warped ways keep in mind that it is reflexive to embrace black humor and satire when you live with the specter of tropical weather.

Here is a sampling of the video war from last year. It all started when the NOLA Bloggers’ malaka du jour, adrastos fired the first shot from his perch over on First Draft. Being a huge fan of H.P. Lovecraft I fired back here on HumidCity, and then Maitri joined the fray. Then Mark “Fountain Walker” Folse tried to be more civilized about things. It was all downhill from there.

Hostilidays, Now With Daleks!

Dec 14, 2009 by Loki

Hostilidays: The annual holiday traditions among the New Orleans bloggers of inflicting the most hideously twisted holiday musics they can find on each other.

Daleks: Cyborg villains from the BBCs sci-fi series Dr. Who. Implacable, evil and driven by an ethos of racial cleansing.

This is the only recorded song from the original The Go Go’s of the 1960s in England this band originated from Newcastle.

A Dalek singing Jingle Bells. Ha!

Hostilidays 2008

Dec 19, 2008 by Loki

Last year I declined paricipating in the annual NOLA Blogosphere Hostilidays, a barrage of holiday oriented YouTube videos of dubious origin and questionable taste. This year, being a huge fan of the works of H.P. Lovecraft, I have the perfect entry: The Carol of the Old Ones. Warning- sick sense of humor required.

Al’s Lights

Nov 25, 2008 by Loki

Whatever else can be said of Al Copeland, and there is a lot to be said, this does mark the passing of an era. A very John Waters kitsch sort of an era, replete with deep fried avian and the best dam biscuits around. Anyway the insane outpouring of lumens that brighten the sky over the suburbs shines its last time this year.

The most obnoxiously legendary display of Christmas lights is about to end its run. Funny, I remember the 70′s when he started. Every year there was an outpouring of annoyance from the neighbors and a constant stream of people there to see the show. The man had full on animatronics in his yard in the 70s!

Anyway, here’s the press release I got:

The late Al Copeland’s famous Christmas
display to make its final appearance
Copeland Family To Hold Last Christmas Display Lighting
on Saturday, November 29

WHAT: Locals and tourists alike recognize the symbolic tradition of the Copeland Christmas lights, as the official mark of the holiday season in New Orleans In a tribute to the legend–the late Al Copeland Sr.–his family will put the famous lights on display for the last time.

WHEN: Saturday, November 29, 2008, 6:00PM

*Media to arrive by 5:45PM*

LOCATION: The Home of the Late Al Copeland, 5001 Folse Drive, Metairie, LA

ADDITIONAL INFO: Al Copeland Sr. passed away earlier this year to Merkel Cell Carcinoma, a rare and deadly form of cancer. To honor his legacy, his family created the Al Copeland Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to contributing money for research to eradicate this rare cancer. To further culminate this holiday, the Copeland Family will be hosting a “Heaven on Earth” gala on Saturday, December 13. Admission is $100 and all proceeds go to The Al Copeland Foundation in support of Merkel Cell Carcinoma Research in Partnership with The University of Pittsburgh Merkel Cell Carcinoma Research Program. Whatever else can be said, this does mark the end of an era. Funny how often that’s happened in the last three years or so, isn’t it?
