I echo the words of Larry Roy, Zulu’s Minister of Fun who said,”Hows the city not going to have Mardi Gras? You going to cancel Chrsitmas?”
People not from here don’t get it. Something I attribute to the fact that the holiday has always been presented by outside media as a reckless drunken bacchanal. There are elements of that certainly, but there is so much more.
The idea that yu can outright cancel the holiday is assinine. You could cancel the parades, you could fail to promote the tourist aspects of it, but come Fat Tuesday people would be dressing up and throwing down. Carnival would happen anyway, although the marketted version might be curtailed. It is a joyus celebration, one that is exemplified at every socioeconomic level.
People that rant about how we are awful for proceeding with Carnival might change their tunes if they had been living in the midst of the new “reconstruction.” Let me reccomend that you give Chris Rose’s new book, 1 Dead in Attic, a try. His is the clearest voice we have. If you want a window into the mania that our injured city has become, as well as into why New Orleanians are different from other folks then this is your book. I think that everyone should read it, then you might just understand……
