Ron Asheton, Stooges Guitarist – RIP

Jan 7, 2009 by

I thought it bad form to post this on Twelfth Night, a time of celebration. Today, however, please take a moment to pause and celebrate the life of Ron Asheton, a founding member of The Stooges, arguably the first real Punk Band, formed in the late 60’s.

With his brother on drums, Ron formed The Stooges with friend Iggy Pop, and the original members had reunited in 2004, releasing a new album, Weirdness, and touring to sold out shows.

Ron Asheton was found dead in his home, laying on the couch, victim of an apparent heart attack.
He was 60 years old.

Go this LINK to hear five of the songs driven by Ashetons seminal guitar work, that not only changed the developing sound of rock music, but identified the Stooges Sound every bit as much as the voice of Iggy Pop.

Iggy Pop’s comment on Asheton’s death was simple; “I’m in shock. He was my best friend.”
Rest in Peace, Ron Asheton. Thanks a million.
