Fighting mindless destruction

This past Sunday, in broad daylight between noon and 6 p.m., the oak tree planted in Lafayette Square by President Bush, Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to commemorate Earth Day 2008 was sawed down.

The Parks and Parkways Department of the City has worked tirelessly to transform this downtown park. But our constant battle against mindless destruction is exemplified by this act.

Our plea is that readers support groups that are working to restore and maintain the city and report crimes like the one that the park suffered this week.
